This study clarifies the transition of Kenzo Tange’s theory of tradition in the 1950s. The way of understanding for Katsura Imperial Villa, known as the theory in the photo book “Katsura,” which views the Katsura from the intersection of upper-class culture and popular culture, can already be seen in the August 1955 issue of “Kenchiku Bunka.’’ Also, the discourse relating Yayoi and Jomon to this contrast was seen in the June 1956 text. Under these circumstances, what triggered the change in Katsura’s critical argument was a change in the concept of “wisdom for life” as its logical basis. Until then it had been used negatively as “Personal things,” the June 1956 text treated it positively as “healthy wisdom for life.” A similar reference was also seen in the conversation with Isamu Noguchi in the May 1956 issue of “Mizue.” It is thus possible that this conversation was a turning point in Tange’s change in Katsura theory. Furthermore, the two essays published in October 1956, in which similar references were made, could be called another turning point, because of the marked change in his perception of the “people.”
